The Most Frequent Acura Repairs

As solid as the Acura automotive line is like any vehicle makes, it has a few problems that seem to crop up more often than others. Our experienced technicians can assist you with a full range of Acura repairs, but we’ll outline the most common. One of the most noted issues is excessive oil consumption across multiple models. Specifically, the oil level declines much more than expected between regularly scheduled oil changes in some vehicles. Since a sufficient supply of oil is critical to safe, efficient engine operation and lifespan, it’s important to keep the oil checked in your Acura, topping it off as needed. The motor most prone to sudden oil deficits (the V6 J-Series) is found in the 2009-2014 TL, 2008-2014 MDX, 2010-2014 TSX, and the 2011-2012 RL. Another complaint filed more often than expected centers around transmission failure. The TL, TLX, and MDX vehicles exhibit the most automatic transmission troubles. The problems vary, including slipping gears, jerking when moving between gears, and complete transmission failure. Therefore, the solutions vary accordingly, too. Possible fixes could be reprogramming, transmission fluid flush, or wiring harness replacement, among other repairs. Premature brake wear is another complaint, particularly in the 2009-2010 TSX. It typically begins as squeaking that quickly progresses to require repair. Finally, some drivers express concern over electronic issues inside the passenger cabin.

Carbon Build-up Over the past few months we’ve seen a fluctuation of clients experiencing problems with their Mini Coopers due to carbon build-up in the intake valves. The cars that have this problem exhibit a range of symptoms from a rough idle or misfire condition to a check engine light. Though this problem can happen on some other BMW products, we’ve noticed it most recently on Minis with the 1.6 liter (4 cylinder) direct injection motor. Some people may describe the symptom they experience as a surging, jerking, hiccup, or misfire. Sometimes it happens when the car is started cold in the morning, sometimes it happens while driving the car. To remedy these symptoms, a carbon cleaning procedure must be performed where the intake valves are de-carboned with walnut blast media and in some cases would include replacement of the spark plugs and ignition coils, if necessary. A preventative measure we like to recommend is to replace the engine oil more frequently than what the manufacturer recommends. Doing an oil change every 7,500 miles is acceptable, but every 5,000 miles is ideal.

Why Should I Keep My Tires Properly Inflated? Your vehicle’s tires are among its most important safety features. You must keep all four tires properly inflated to stay safe and secure behind the wheel. This reduces your risk of an automotive accident, extends the life of your tires, and saves you more money in the long run. The PSI refers to the minimum air your car’s tires need. This number can be found on a sticker inside your owner’s manual or on the driver’s side door jam. Here at Union Line Garage in Pennington, New Jersey, we recommend checking your tire pressure weekly to ensure each tire is properly inflated. The Dangers of Under and Over Tire Inflation Your tires should always be inflated to exact specifications. If your tires are under-inflated, your car will experience: Premature tire wear and tear A 25% reduction in tire life Poor control and stability Poor fuel economy A higher risk of tire damage if you drive over debris or potholes On the other hand, over-inflated tires can cause: Poor handling and control An increased risk of blowouts because of the excessive pressure A higher risk of damage if you drive over potholes or road debris To prevent tire under- or over-inflation, check your tire pressure once a week. Always check the tire pressure before a long road trip. When checking the tire pressure, use a high-quality pressure gauge. These typically cost around $15 and can be purchased at any automotive store. Follow the tire pressure in your owner’s manual, not the pressure on the tire sidewall. It is best to check your tire pressure before driving your car, not when the tires are hot. This can increase the PSI. If your tire pressure is continuously low, it might indicate a leak.
